Crimes, according to their severity, are classified as infractions (a mildest form of crime), misdemeanors (a less severe form of crime) and felonies (a severe form of crime).

The punishment of these crimes is proportional to their severity. Thus, an infraction is punishable by detention or the imposition of a fine, a misdemeanor by imprisonment of up to five years, while a felony is punishable by imprisonment, starting from five years and beyond.

A crime can be time-barred in the case there is a long chronological distance from the time when the crime was committed to the time when the defendant was serviced. The crime is also time-barred even if a defendant has been convicted in absentia but not arrested within a given time span.
